CHARACTER PROFILING - MEABH

Name: Dawn
Age: 45
Gender: Female

The name was important for us because we wanted it to be as meaningful as all the other cinematic elements. After doing some research we decided on the name Dawn because it means resurrection or rebirth and this links very well with our title Youth. We incorporated many metaphors throughout and tried to keep to Barthe's theory of symbolic code.

Dawn's life : Dawn is a woman in her mid 40s who lives alone in a house in Belfast. She is single and perhaps a bit lonely. This is suggested by the fact that two men find her in her house. They are not members of her family, they are not her husband, they seem to be concerned acquaintances more than anything else. On the mantle piece, Dawn has photos which look old - perhaps suggesting that she cherishes her youth (linking to our title) and looks at the photos to remember good times. She doesn't have a wedding ring so again we feel that she is single or at least not married. All of this accumulated presents the idea that Dawn is lonely and wants a change, perhaps providing an answer as to why she is engaging with the device in the first place.

Casting Dawn : We had no budget so needed an actor who would act for free. After Sinead cancelled on us, we had a decision to make between Maria (another actress who had contacted us on Facebook with an interest in the role) and Meabh. We decided on Meabh because we felt she fitted Dawn looks wise better, and also we know we can rely on her and we can't afford to have any more instances like that with Sinead.
